Cruïlla XXS Comedy “English Open Mic”

21 JUL, 2020

[CAS]

Despite of the last minute hesitation due to the restrictions applied to the cultural scene in Barcelona, the “Cruïlla XXS Comedy” Cycle finally got the green light to continue its development with normality.

A normality, the new one, distinguished by the smell of hydroalcoholic gel, face masks, social distancing and the rigorous observance of the sanitary rules that can be noticed as soon as you walk through the door of the charming Garden of Barcelona’s Maritim Museum. The most distracted attendees are even able to purchase masks and hydroalcoholic gel right at the entrance. No excuses: #CultureIsSafe

Chris Groves was the host of this soiree in which we were able to enjoy the performances of some of the most active artists in the english speaking city’s stand-up comedy circuit, which has been developing and offering comedy nights at risible prices almost every day of the week for years: Comedy with Dorothy, Atomic Comedy, Basemint Comedy, Imprfcto Comedy, Brew Ha-Ha Comedy, the comedy nights at the new Pub Limerick or the Pumpage Network open mic and comedy show are just some examples of the rich and diverse comedy culture activities in english in Barcelona.

Chris Groves, the presenter, who premiered his new show “Being Catalanish” less than two weeks ago, is one of the veterans in the city and has been performing in english, spanish and catalan on the radio, the TV and practically at each and every comedy club of Barcelona for years, so the night couldn’t have a better host.

In total, there were nine comedians (3 women and 6 men) going up on stage to test their sets and make us laugh with their stories and thoughts in a “catalan-friendly” night full of linguistic and cultural references about Barcelona’s society in which almost none of the artists got to pronounce correctly the name of the festival: “Cruïlla

There was comedy for every taste:

From the amazing dark vibe of Andy Casper and Marnie Manning (winner of the International Comedy Festival of Barcelona in 2018), to a more observational kind of comedy like the one from Helen Lambshead, the scientist Matthew Murtra, the catalan screenwriter Pau Escribano - who was performing in english for the first time - or the scottish Stuart Kennedy, to what they added the dark humor of Hannah Becker - who, along with Robert Marquez, gave one of the best performances of the night (without demeaning the rest of the artists) - and Luke Messina Meginsky.

Undoubtedly, a very pleasant soiree that we hope to enjoy again in which the non native english speakers had the chance to feel smart for seeing a stand-up comedy show of international artists, although it was thanks to the artists themselves and their perfect pronunciation and diction that couldn’t make us easier to understand their performances.
